Constancy

By Ava Horton

rooted moot point,

i exist to be,

being here.

here lies discarded marks

of what once was

mine but fell.

felling the fruits of my efforts,

footfalls, former & future

fall in my shade.

shading a show of domestic home

winged singers gossip

from brawny arms.

arms above the swarm that harms

rolling takes a tolling

but i protect,

protect all the clinking

of a collar’s lithe twinkling,

burgeoning spring,

springing forth from my shade,

my touch, my creation

governing this nation.

national monarchy, prone to anarchy

my rule does not aim to fool

i will stand, immovable.

Ava Horton is a sophomore at CC studying Sustainable Development. She wrote this poem about a tree in a poetry course last spring.
